Sete Star Sept interview (October 2012)
An interview with Kiyasu, drummer from Japanese grindcore band Sete Star Sept.
Conducted by Mr Pand via email, October 2012.
Pand: For anyone not familiar with Sete Star Sept, can you quickly introduce the band?
Kiyasu: Sete Star Sept is Bass and Drums 2-piece band. Kae is playing on bass and vocals. Kiyasu is playing on drums. The band started from 2004 as Kiyasu on vocals for 3-piece band. We changed to the current lineup in 2009.
Pand: What is the story behind your band’s name?
Kiyasu: It's a term taken from Japanese Pachinko. The origin of the name is "7 star 7". It has no meaning. "Sete" in Portuguese and "Sept" in French mean Seven.
Pand: You’re the only remaining original band member - was forming the band your idea originally?
Kiyasu: In 2004, I was looking for the band member forming Sete Star Sept. At first lineup is 3 pieces. I was vocalist and 2 other guys were playing and making harsh noise. It was one vocal and two electronic equipments. Its sound like totally the Gerogerigegege influenced noise band.
Pand: What difference has the change from 3 members to 2 made to the band?
Kiyasu: We needed to change the band's sound, because after we'd recorded 1st album "Revision Of Noise", I was caught in the grindcore sound as documented. I really don't want to play the song based boring guitar riffs and boring drum parts.
Pand: You seem to be constantly touring. What is it about performing live that you enjoy so much?
Kiyasu: It's simple. I just want to give the impression to people. That's why we must be constantly touring.
Pand: You've recently finished a Japanese tour. Any highlights or amusing incidents?
Kiyasu: We've been on tour with Penis Geyser and the guys from Rage For All Label for a half of the tour dates. We don't have any particular highlight things. All of Japan's shows were great for us!! Most of people were going crazy when we play.
Pand: What role does improvisation play in your music?
Kiyasu: The role is simple. We need to destroy and create our music from improvisation play.
Pand: Your song titles are mostly in English - what about your lyrics?
Kiyasu: Yes, it's mostly in English and sometimes in Japanese. Content of the song lyrics that focus by different.
Pand: Sete Star Sept have released quite a lot of stuff over the years. Do you have any favourites among your releases?
Kiyasu: "Gero Me" and 3-inch CD "All is Wrong" are my favorite stuff.
Pand: You’ve worked with a number of different record labels - have all of your experiences been positive?
Kiyasu: Yes,they have. All of them could help releasing records and booking shows. We had good relationship with them.
Pand: I think the cover for Gero Me is really bizarre. Who designs your artwork?
Kiyasu: The cover for "Gero Me" was worked by Shintaro Kago who is great Japanese manga artist.
Pand: "Gero Me" and "Revision of Noise" were both released on multiple
physical formats - CD, vinyl and cassette. What do you think of bands only releasing stuff digitally in mp3 format?
Kiyasu: I think physical releases are very important for us. I will keep to work on physical format for future because human is physical.
Pand: Which bands originally got you into grindcore?
Kiyasu: Early Napalm Death, AxCx and The Gerogerigegege.
Pand: Which drummers have particularly influenced, inspired or encouraged you?
Kiyasu: Mick Harris and Tiroro.
Pand: When you’re not drumming, how do you fill your time?
Kiyasu: Reading books with coffee.
Pand: If you could be on a four-way split with any three other bands, current or past, who would you choose?
Kiyasu: I would choose The Gerogerigegege, Minch and Nut Screamer.
Pand: Are there any new grindcore acts in Japan we should be expecting great things from in the future?
Kiyasu: I don't know any new grindcore acts. The grindcore scene in Japan is very small. There are not many grindcore bands. I hope Japanese young people get more into extreme music in the future.
Pand: What does the future hold for Sete Star Sept?
Kiyasu: We will go to tour all over the world and will release much more records. I would like to contribute to the development of extreme music.
Sete Star Sept is forever. We never stop playing for future.
